清邁 Massage Guide

Chiang Mai is the cultural capital of northern Thailand, a walkable city of temples, cafes and mountain views where a massage fits naturally into the day. The pace is slower than Bangkok and prices are generally lower, so it is an easy place to try several styles during a longer stay. Small family-run shops line the lanes of the walled Old City, while the Nimmanhaemin district offers more polished day spas and wellness studios popular with visitors and long-stay residents. This guide explains which area suits your trip, what a fair price looks like, how the northern Thai approach differs from the central style, and how to arrange transport from the airport, which is unusually close to the centre.

Massage styles in 清邁

Northern Thai or Lanna massage shares its roots with the central style but is often described as slower and more rhythmic, with a strong focus on pressure along the body lines and on the legs and back. You will also find hot herbal compress treatments, where steamed bundles of local herbs are pressed on tired muscles, as well as oil massage, foot reflexology and aromatherapy facials. Many spas here are set in teak houses or gardens, which suits the relaxed character of the city. If you are unsure, ask the staff to recommend a treatment based on how active you have been, particularly after hiking or a long day of temple visits.

  • Old City

Inside the old moat you will find traditional shops, small guesthouse spas and quick foot massages between temples, at friendly prices.

  • Riverside and Wat Ket

Getting to 清邁

Chiang Mai International Airport (CNX) is just a short drive from the Old City, usually around fifteen to twenty minutes, which makes arrival simple. Taxis, ride-hailing apps and private transfers all run from the terminal. Within the city, red songthaew shared trucks, ride-hailing and rented scooters are the common ways to get around; the Old City itself is easy to explore on foot. Overnight trains and buses also connect Chiang Mai with Bangkok if you prefer to travel by land.

Airport transfers: CNX → NIMMAN

Best time to visit

The cool, dry season from about November to February is the most comfortable and the most popular. From roughly February to April, farm burning in the region can cause hazy, smoky air, so travellers sensitive to air quality may prefer other months. The rainy season, from around May or June to October, keeps the hills green and the crowds smaller. Massage shops stay open all year, and an indoor treatment is a good plan on a hot or wet afternoon.

  • Sunday Walking Street

A weekly night market along Ratchadamnoen Road in the Old City, full of crafts and street food.

  • Night Bazaar

A long-running evening market area east of the Old City for souvenirs and snacks.

  • Ethical elephant sanctuaries

Massage etiquette

  • Take your shoes off at the door; most spas provide sandals and cotton clothing.
  • Say "bao bao" for softer pressure or "raeng raeng" for firmer pressure if you want it changed.
  • Tell your therapist about injuries, pregnancy or recent sun exposure before an oil or herbal compress treatment.
  • Tipping is welcome but optional; 50 to 100 baht directly to your therapist is typical.
  • Dress respectfully when moving between temples and spas, covering shoulders and knees.
  • Book garden and boutique spas ahead during the cool season, when they fill up in the evenings.

清邁 massage FAQ

How much does a massage cost in Chiang Mai?

Typical ranges are about 200-400 baht for a one-hour foot massage and 250-500 baht for a one-hour traditional Thai massage in local shops. Oil massages cost more, and resort or day-spa treatments start at around 1,500 baht. Always check the venue menu.

Which area of Chiang Mai is best for a massage?

Nimmanhaemin has the most polished day spas and the easiest evening options, while the Old City suits quick, friendly shops between temples. Riverside areas are quieter and suit garden spas.

What is northern Thai (Lanna) massage?

It is the regional style of Thai massage, often described as slower and more rhythmic than the central style, with attention to the legs and back. Many spas combine it with hot herbal compresses.

Do I need to book a massage in advance in Chiang Mai?

Walk-ins are common in the Old City, but garden spas and busy Nimman studios are best booked ahead, especially in the cool season and in the evening.

Is it a good idea to get a massage after trekking?

Many visitors do. A foot massage or a firmer Thai massage can ease tired legs, but tell the therapist about any strains or injuries first so the pressure can be adjusted.

How do I get from Chiang Mai airport to the city?

The airport is close to the centre, usually about fifteen to twenty minutes by car. Taxis, ride-hailing apps and private transfers are all available from the terminal.
